A little over two years ago, I was asked to foster ten-and-a-half year-old SSB (Sensational Senior Beagle) Jewel. I was reluctant for several reasons and another volunteer took her in.
However, I couldn't get her little face out of my brainwindowsup and a short time later I decided to adopt her. She weighed over forty pounds when she came into the program, but I take pride in getting beagles fit.
After some medical attention, this girl blossomed....she was a character, funny, entertaining, and always full of energy—especially when she reached her goal weight of 26.2 pounds.
The other volunteer had given Jewel a little stuffed toy and this continued to be her very favorite play toy... she would grab it and run around the house with it... insisting that I toss it for her to retrieve. This was a girl who could barely climb stairs initially. My resident beagle, Sashi, also fell in love with her.
Sadly, we lost her yesterday quite unexpectedly. She developed signs of heart disease and pulmonary edema barely a week ago. Despite treatment she continued to decline and we had to make the difficult decision to let her go.
Her time with me was too short, but the quality of that time and her joy cannot be measured. Her absence is painful, but her presence was immeasurable. I am grateful that B.O.N.E.S. took her in and that her time with us was nothing short of joyful. Here she is all svelte and happy.
