We adopted our girl Shelby just as BREW was becoming B.O.N.E.S. in May/June of 2003. She was the sweetest beagle, a little on the shy side, but always a presence in our household. She was 7 when we adopted her and she was fostered by Leanne Parks and made the journey down from Maine, to be a NH dog on 5/25/03. She fit right in with our male beagle and female greyhound, although she did have to put the greyhound in her place a few times.
Shelby never barked, I mean never, so we are not sure if she was all beagle:) Her favorite things were eating, long walks, sleeping in her many dogs beds throughout the house, laying in the sunshine, being with her people, and CAR RIDES. She could ride forever and you wouldn't even know she was there.
In 2007 we tried to foster/adopt a beagle, Bullet, from B.O.N.E.S., but Shelby was having none of it. She hated Bullet and went after him every chance she got. Poor Bullet was afraid of her, and rightly so. Fortunately Bullet was adopted by the Palmer family in CT, and is now known as Sam.
At age 11 she developed arthritis and was put on pain medications to make it easier for her. Unfortunately over the years the pain medications also had their effect on her body, so we had to make the decision to ease her pain. She fought the good fight for over 3 years, but on 1/8/10 she was ready, and we weren't. We take comfort in the fact that she is has now crossed the bridge and is young and whole again with our other 2 beagles that came before her.
This is the first time in 20 years that this house hasn't had a beagle in it, and it hurts. We want to thank B.O.N.E.S. for bringing this sweet girl into our lives, and giving us our journey with her. It was quite a ride, that we wouldn't have missed for anything.
