Mackey came to B.O.N.E.S. from a bad situation in central Massachusetts. He was underweight and limped painfully. X-rays revealed a displaced femur fracture in his right hind leg – it was amazing that Mackey could use the leg at all. The options didn't look hopeful, but with help from the B.O.N.E.S. Medical Director, a carefully-structured exercise program, and a lot of TLC, he can now lead a normal life.
As Mackey recovered from his injuries, long-time B.O.N.E.S. adopter John was mourning the loss of his long-time beagle companion, Hudson, whose "Chronicles" were documented here for many years. John was settling into a new job with lots of driving, and Mackey loved to ride... a great match. John and Mackey will both share their viewpoints with us on this page.
Greetings from Fairburn, Georgia.
Mackey and I are hauling equipment from a job near Columbus, Georgia to our Baltimore yard. The job is finishing up and has to be off site by the end of the year.
We're on a layover at a truck stop and I thought it might be fun to send along a photo of Mackey in his Christmas attire. After fighting to get the hat on and trying to persuade him to keep it on long enough for a photo, I gave up!
Mackey showed his independent nature once again. He is his own beagle and will not bow to the whims of his owner... or anybody, for that matter!
I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and happy holiday season. Enjoy Mackey's Christmas picture! (Good thing it wasn't a Christmas card!)
So here we are at a truck stop, and after a walk, John tries to put a hat on me.
I'm thinking, "what is this all about?" I don't wear hats, we're in Georgia, and it isn't even cold out!
Anyway, after a while, John gave up and just took my picture instead. I'm still trying to figure this out. Why does he think I need a hat after all these years? Sometimes I just can't figure him out!
I have a funny story to tell about John. We have a job where we have to go through a security search including the vehicle, both inside and out. The guards and I get along quite well. They all give me treats and John even gave them a B.O.N.E.S. calendar.
Well, one of the other drivers went there and was talking to the head guard and was telling him that they wouldn't be seeing John for a few weeks because he was working in Georgia. The guard looked at him with a puzzled look on his face and after a minute the driver said, "John... you know... Mackey?" THEN the guard knew exactly whom the driver was talking about!
Sometimes I feel sorry for John, but then he does something stupid like trying to make me wear a hat, and the sympathy is gone!
I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas, hats or no hats!
