Mackey came to B.O.N.E.S. from a bad situation in central Massachusetts. He was underweight and limped painfully. X-rays revealed a displaced femur fracture in his right hind leg – it was amazing that Mackey could use the leg at all. The options didn't look hopeful, but with help from the B.O.N.E.S. Medical Director, a carefully-structured exercise program, and a lot of TLC, he can now lead a normal life.
As Mackey recovered from his injuries, long-time B.O.N.E.S. adopter John was mourning the loss of his long-time beagle companion, Hudson, whose "Chronicles" were documented here for many years. John was settling into a new job with lots of driving, and Mackey loved to ride... a great match. John and Mackey will both share their viewpoints with us on this page.
Good morning from Maine. After a few weeks at home, we're heading to Baltimore to work down there for a while.
I attended two weddings in the last three weeks, which meant that I had to leave Mackey with friends.
He did well and seemed to enjoy himself... although when I picked him up each time, while his tail was wagging furiously, he spent the whole time growling at me!
It was quite funny, but a little concerning at the same time. I think he got his different voices mixed up.
This past weekend I left him while I attended a wedding in New Hampshire. When I picked him up, he had the same growling/wagging reaction towards me. What was more disturbing were the photos that I saw! My sweet, innocent Mackey posing in a smoking jacket with a drink, cigar, and dog treat all within reach of his greedy little paws! To say I was shocked would be the understatement of the year!
I've kept a close watch on him this past week and he doesn't seem to have any adverse reactions to his "lost weekend" of experimentation.
I do have serious doubts about leaving him again...
I can't wait to tell you about my weekends with Tim and Theresa!
They are cool people that I have a great time visiting with John. They had a dog named Chopper who, sadly, isn't with us anymore.
Anyway, they offered to look after me when John had to go away for two weekends. They have a great place. Theresa works from home, so she and I get to spend the day together. They also take me on long walks and spoil me rotten.
The best part is that I get to help them mess with John!
The first trick is that they taught me to growl at John when he comes to pick me up. This really freaks him out, because they told me that if I growl AND wag my tail, he won't know what to think!
The best part is when they got me a smoking jacket for dogs and set me up with a drink, cigar, and dog biscuit. I have to admit that I did ham it up a little.
John was a good sport about it all, but it's still fun to mess with his head!
Have a good summer and we'll report in soon.
