Mackey in the Cab Mackey came to B.O.N.E.S. from a bad situation in central Massachusetts. He was underweight and limped painfully. X-rays revealed a displaced femur fracture in his right hind leg – it was amazing that Mackey could use the leg at all. The options didn't look hopeful, but with help from the B.O.N.E.S. Medical Director, a carefully-structured exercise program, and a lot of TLC, he can now lead a normal life.

As Mackey recovered from his injuries, long-time B.O.N.E.S. adopter John was mourning the loss of his long-time beagle companion, Hudson, whose "Chronicles" were documented here for many years. John was settling into a new job with lots of driving, and Mackey loved to ride... a great match. John and Mackey will both share their viewpoints with us on this page.

Mackey in the Cab - April, 2020

John:

Happy Easter from Durham, Maine.

Mackey and I are home and hoping that this beautiful Easter Sunday will allow last week's snowstorm to finally melt! We got home just as the storm started.

I hope everybody has been fortunate enough to stay healthy during this crisis. So far, there have been lots of changes at work, but fortunately, we're all still employed, but at reduced hours. Lots of safety programs have been put in place. The toughest adjustment for me is no more group hug after morning stretches!

I had to take a week off for quarantine after a trip to Florida to go to some drag races. I got down Wednesday, and Thursday I found out that the races were canceled. Friday, I found out that I would have to quarantine for two weeks when I got home. I was told to call the company physician Monday and answer some questions. When I called in, I was showing no signs of sickness. When he asked me if I could work from home, I said no, I drive a truck for the company. He told me that I only had to take one week off. I appreciated the fact that I didn't have to lose two weeks of income. Maybe it was the fact that I mentioned that I might be able to practice my shifting in the bathroom using a plunger...

Work for us drivers is on a day-to-day basis for the time being. Most jobs are still running, but the transportation has been affected. Last week, I had four days of work between Littleton, New Hampshire and Worcester, Massachusetts. It was nice to know that I had multiple days of work.

There was a bonus: we had a scenic place to spend the evenings. It's opportunities like this that remind me of how lucky I am to have the life I have.

As far as the social distancing and self-quarantine, it's life as usual. This lifestyle has been standard procedure for me all along. Again, I realize how fortunate I am to have a simple life. It must be very stressful to have a family and be responsible for their well-being. Making sure everyone is safe, has all the food and supplies they need, and keeping everyone occupied, happy, and educated!

I can only imagine if I was married, trying to explain to my lovely wife, the various options to toilet paper available in the house!

I guess that covers it all for now.

Mackey:

Greetings from home.

I've got some mixed emotions going on this weekend. I loved the snow storm we had last week. Snow is great, but I love rolling in the grass! I don't know if I want the snow to melt so I can roll in the grass, or for the snow to stay so I can run in it and eat it!

Everyone has been acting differently for the past few weeks. I hear a lot about "social distancing," "quarantines," and other big words. I don't really know what all this is all about.

All I know is everyone at the job sites seem to be happier, because they seem to be forced to keep their distance from John. They still like to come over and say hi to me! I don't know what this is all about, but it seems to work out for me... well, for everybody, I guess...

Mackey in the Cab - April, 2020We've been spending a lot of time at home lately. I don't mind, because the recliner is quite comfortable! I even let John sit with me and we both get a few naps in while watching TV. Being home more than usual isn't all that bad.

We were home for a whole week recently, and I really did miss riding. Once in a while, after going out and taking care of business, John would let me sit in the pickup truck for a little while. I guess for now, it's either recliner time or trucking time, either one is fine by me!

Until next time...
