Mackey came to B.O.N.E.S. from a bad situation in central Massachusetts. He was underweight and limped painfully. X-rays revealed a displaced femur fracture in his right hind leg – it was amazing that Mackey could use the leg at all. The options didn't look hopeful, but with help from the B.O.N.E.S. Medical Director, a carefully-structured exercise program, and a lot of TLC, he can now lead a normal life.
As Mackey recovered from his injuries, long-time B.O.N.E.S. adopter John was mourning the loss of his long-time beagle companion, Hudson, whose "Chronicles" were documented here for many years. John was settling into a new job with lots of driving, and Mackey loved to ride... a great match. John and Mackey will both share their viewpoints with us on this page.
Good morning. I am taking a little break from cleaning the truck here at home.
Mackey and I have moved into a different truck and I have been a couple weeks moving all the stuff in, organizing, cleaning, and getting settled in.
The company downsized the trucking department, so now there are three trucks instead of four. I had a feeling this might eventually happen, due to all the time we have spent working out of the Baltimore facility the last few years. It was unfortunate for the driver that had to go, but he has a job closer to home and has landed on his feet... or in the case of us truck drivers, on his butt!
My previous truck's lease expires in July, and since it was plagued with problems, I moved into the present truck early. It is two years old, and has a larger bunk, which is great! I now have more living space and also have more storage for personal stuff and work related tools and gear.
The process took about a day and a half to clear out everything from the "new" truck, separate and organize everything, do the same with the truck I was driving, then consolidate it all into the new truck. It's still an ongoing process to find the final spot for everything, from tools and equipment to personal items.
During all this, we took a trip to North Hero, Vermont with some equipment to a bridge job we are doing. It is a beautiful trip, as long as it's not winter! We made it as far as Gorham, New Hampshire for the night. The next morning, Mackey and I enjoyed a quiet morning by the river with a cup of coffee. Times like this make me realize how lucky I am!
I've been lying around for the past two weekends watching John clean, wax, and polish our new truck. We've changed trucks... and the new truck has a bigger sleeper which means a BIGGER bed! This one has plenty of room for both of us. The old sleeper was like trying to sleep with John inside a sleeping bag!
I've gotten so used to him washing the truck that the water hitting the window doesn't even wake me up anymore.
Yesterday, we delivered to a job in Pittsfield and John saw an old friend, Jason, from the days down south. Jason and his wife, Cindy, both work for the company, especially on the jobs in North Carolina. As it turns out, they're both working up here for a while. Jason called Cindy, who was working inside. On break, she came out to say "hi. She brought me a can of Vienna sausages. She said that it was Jason's lunch!
I offered him a couple of Milk Bones, but he politely declined. Like John said, times like this makes me appreciate how lucky I am!
That about covers it for now.
Stay safe and healthy!
