Mackey in the Cab Mackey came to B.O.N.E.S. from a bad situation in central Massachusetts. He was underweight and limped painfully. X-rays revealed a displaced femur fracture in his right hind leg – it was amazing that Mackey could use the leg at all. The options didn't look hopeful, but with help from the B.O.N.E.S. Medical Director, a carefully-structured exercise program, and a lot of TLC, he can now lead a normal life.

As Mackey recovered from his injuries, long-time B.O.N.E.S. adopter John was mourning the loss of his long-time beagle companion, Hudson, whose "Chronicles" were documented here for many years. John was settling into a new job with lots of driving, and Mackey loved to ride... a great match. John and Mackey will both share their viewpoints with us on this page.

Mackey in the Cab - January, 2022

John:

Happy New Year from Baltimore!

We have been working out of Baltimore for several months now, so I'm going to go back in time to try to get caught up on our adventures.

Mackey and I came down to Baltimore back in the beginning of October to cover some new jobs in the area. Things are still slow in Maine, so I've stayed down here to spread out the workload for the two remaining trucks in Maine. The company also had a large job finishing up in Portland, Tennessee. This kept us quite busy running back and forth to, Baltimore, Connecticut, and occasionally, Maine.

The road work was a welcome change and brought back lots of old memories of life on the road. I also enjoyed traveling some familiar highways that I haven't seen in years.

An additional bonus was that we were able to spend a few days over Thanksgiving visiting family in Loudon, Tennessee. We loaded Tuesday in Portland and passed right by Loudon on our way to Baltimore, so I couldn't have planned it any better if I tried.

It was a nice, Quiet visit and we were able to get out a couple times for some beautiful hiking on nearby trails. Mackey really held up well for an older beagle... better than my brother, Dave, and I did, anyway.

We packed up and headed out Saturday and had a nice quiet trip back to Baltimore where we continued our road trips.

I hope everyone enjoyed a happy holiday season and have a healthy, happy new year!

Mackey:

I've been with John down in Baltimore for as long as I can remember. Lots of trucking, which I really enjoy.

Although I enjoy sitting in the truck watching John and the other guys load or unload, especially when the weather isn't so nice, I do enjoy the feeling of moving down the highway, watching the scenery.

I've enjoyed getting my morning routine in Baltimore of going in and getting my morning treats from Adele. She can't resist my beagle eyes!

John and I have started walking a couple of times a day. I don't know if it is for him or me, but I enjoy getting out and sniffing out who had been roaming around the yard.

During one of our trips, we stopped to visit John's brother and his wife. I had a great time lying around getting spoiled. We went on a couple hikes. Even though they did pretty well for a couple of old guys, I kept having to stop and wait for them!

Mackey in the Cab - January, 2022On the second hike, a cute jogger came running by and I thought hey, she is going my speed, so I took off with her! She slowed down enough to allow old John to catch up and I decided I had better stick with him. She came back the other way about a half hour later and John joked that I was on a leash because I would rather be with her. If he only knew...

Well, it's time to go back to my nap, and then maybe a walk around the yard.

Happy New Year!
