Mackey in the Cab Mackey came to B.O.N.E.S. from a bad situation in central Massachusetts. He was underweight and limped painfully. X-rays revealed a displaced femur fracture in his right hind leg – it was amazing that Mackey could use the leg at all. The options didn't look hopeful, but with help from the B.O.N.E.S. Medical Director, a carefully-structured exercise program, and a lot of TLC, he can now lead a normal life.

As Mackey recovered from his injuries, long-time B.O.N.E.S. adopter John was mourning the loss of his long-time beagle companion, Hudson, whose "Chronicles" were documented here for many years. John was settling into a new job with lots of driving, and Mackey loved to ride... a great match. John and Mackey will both share their viewpoints with us on this page.

Mackey in the Cab - February, 2022

John:

Greetings from Maine! Mackey and I are enjoying some rare home time and trying to get caught up on things like updates and taxes... you know, the two things in life that you just can't escape. I'll pick up from where I left off on the last update.

After a nice Thanksgiving in Tennessee, we finished out the year hauling the equipment and supplies from the job in Tennessee to our Baltimore, Connecticut, and Maine locations. This was a really enjoyable period for me, because it gave me some road work, which brought back lots of fond memories of my cross-country trucking days.

As each job winds down, the crews are all facing a different job at a different location in another part of the state or even a different part of the country. Like trucking, they live a life away from home for extended periods. It is fun to run into familiar faces at different jobs at different times.

We eventually made it home for Christmas and spent the holiday at the beach in Wells with family. It was a quiet weekend and a very lazy Christmas, which we all enjoyed very much!

I was planning to take the week off to get caught up and re-charge, but a truck was needed to be hauled from Maryland back to Maine immediately, so I was able to finish out the year on a strong note.

Mackey:

We just came in from our morning walk around the property and I sure am glad to be able to see some ground! I'm sick of slipping every time I go out! John puts things on his boots to keep him from slipping on the ice, but I get nothing. I guess I should be happy that he doesn't put booties on me or get us matching sweaters!

We have spent a lot of time riding in the truck and going to all the different locations, but that has kept me from getting my morning treats in Baltimore. For a while, I was going in every morning to visit with Adelle and get my meatballs... then, John and I started walking so I could keep my weight under control for next year's calendar, in case it's a beach shot...

Mackey in the Cab - February, 2022We made it home for Christmas and went down to the beach for the weekend. It was too cold to go in the water, but perfect weather for lying around doing as little as possible.

Even still, I was pretty exhausted on the ride home. It must have been from opening my Christmas gifts.

I didn't realize that gift giving was a part of Christmas, since I have never gotten anything from John! Kathy and Christine, on the other hand, showed me the true meaning of Christmas! It's probably a good thing that John doesn't have kids... just an observation.

Well, that about covers it for now. Time for a nap.
