Mackey came to B.O.N.E.S. from a bad situation in central Massachusetts. He was underweight and limped painfully. X-rays revealed a displaced femur fracture in his right hind leg – it was amazing that Mackey could use the leg at all. The options didn't look hopeful, but with help from the B.O.N.E.S. Medical Director, a carefully-structured exercise program, and a lot of TLC, he can now lead a normal life.
As Mackey recovered from his injuries, long-time B.O.N.E.S. adopter John was mourning the loss of his long-time beagle companion, Hudson, whose "Chronicles" were documented here for many years. John was settling into a new job with lots of driving, and Mackey loved to ride... a great match. John and Mackey will both share their viewpoints with us on this page.
Hello from Durham.
I have an unexpected day off from work, due to a crane move being rescheduled. We had a quiet 4th of July at home and got a lot done around the house and yard. It has been very busy at work, so it was nice to have a full weekend at home.
A few weekends ago, we were asked to attend a job fair/open house at our facility in Brewer, Maine. I loaded up our heavy-haul truck, cleaned and polished the rig, and spent the day entertaining the kids as they climbed all over the trucks, bulldozer, excavator, etc. It was a long day but fun for us "kids" and productive for the employment department. After a full day, a lot of the volunteers had left, and since I was the only one left that can operate the equipment, I got to put it all back inside the fence. I had a local run that I was planning to do later in the day, but the day ended at 7:30 that evening, so I decided to do it Sunday morning.
Needless to say, by the time that trip was done, it was mid-day and not worth going home, so we spent the afternoon in Pittsfield.
The work has slowed down for us, so tomorrow Mackey and I are loading up and heading to Baltimore to work down there for a while. I am happy to go down south. The other drivers and the dispatcher are all happy to see me go, since that means only having to keep two trucks busy instead of three.
That's about all for now...
Except for all the loud noises this weekend, it has been fun lying around watching John work! He spent one day trimming/cutting trees on the property. One afternoon he burned two brush piles. He did all that without hurting himself, or me — and didn't burn down the neighborhood! Perhaps there is some hope for him, after all.
A few weekends ago, we went to another truck event where kids climbed all around the truck, honking the horn, and messing up the bed. It is nice to get a lot of attention. Someone even got me my own dish of ice cream, so, that made the whole day worth it!
All in all, it was a nice weekend. I'm glad John didn't take me to go see fireworks. the ones we did hear were far enough away that they didn't bother me. It was nice to spend the evening sitting by the fire watching it, and the day come to an end.
Tomorrow, we pack up, load up, and head south to face new adventures and destinations.
Until next time...
