Mackey came to B.O.N.E.S. from a bad situation in central Massachusetts. He was underweight and limped painfully. X-rays revealed a displaced femur fracture in his right hind leg – it was amazing that Mackey could use the leg at all. The options didn't look hopeful, but with help from the B.O.N.E.S. Medical Director, a carefully-structured exercise program, and a lot of TLC, he can now lead a normal life.
As Mackey recovered from his injuries, long-time B.O.N.E.S. adopter John was mourning the loss of his long-time beagle companion, Hudson, whose "Chronicles" were documented here for many years. John was settling into a new job with lots of driving, and Mackey loved to ride... a great match. John and Mackey will both share their viewpoints with us on this page.
Happy Easter!
We are back in Baltimore after a week of site work in Georgia. The company is starting a job for Georgia Power replacing the gates at a dam in Taluga, Georgia. I was asked to stay on site to haul supplies and equipment down to the dam. It is a steep, winding gravel road down to the dam and we had to use a smaller straight truck (no trailer) to navigate the road. It's always fun to stay for a while to get to know the crew better and to see what it takes to get a job up and running. There are lots of coordination, logistics, and last-minute problems and changes that have to be addressed. I'm glad that I don't have to worry about any of that!
We spent five days hauling everything from the lay-down yard down to the dam. It was about a seven-mile round trip and took about an hour and a half per trip. The first two days were concentrated on getting the seventeen barge sections down to the water, then another several loads of crane mats. The last few days were spent getting the rest of the tools and equipment down. The weather cooperated and we were able to finish up on Friday ahead of schedule. It was a long week for us all, but it's a good crew that worked well and wasn't afraid of long workdays.
Now it's a week working out of Baltimore, and then back to Maine for some maintenance to be done on the truck.
I've spent the last week sitting in the truck in the middle of the woods! I thought I was supposed to be moving when sitting in it.
John kept going off in a little truck. Whenever he would return, We would go out and explore, and then he would leave again. I figured that since he was leaving me in the truck, that it was just a temporary thing. It's like the time last year when we spent five weeks at the naval shipyard as the on-site driver there.
I did get a lot of attention from all the guys there. It was fun to bark and greet them every morning!
There sure were a lot of bears around. I could smell them everywhere! I wonder if John even had a clue. We did hear them a couple times in the mornings.
I am glad to be back in Baltimore because that means tomorrow, I will see Adele and get my meatballs!
