Mackey in the Cab Mackey came to B.O.N.E.S. from a bad situation in central Massachusetts. He was underweight and limped painfully. X-rays revealed a displaced femur fracture in his right hind leg – it was amazing that Mackey could use the leg at all. The options didn't look hopeful, but with help from the B.O.N.E.S. Medical Director, a carefully-structured exercise program, and a lot of TLC, he can now lead a normal life.

As Mackey recovered from his injuries, long-time B.O.N.E.S. adopter John was mourning the loss of his long-time beagle companion, Hudson, whose "Chronicles" were documented here for many years. John was settling into a new job with lots of driving, and Mackey loved to ride... a great match. John and Mackey will both share their viewpoints with us on this page.

Mackey in the Cab - July, 2023

John:

Greetings from sweltering Baltimore!

Mackey and I arrived last Tuesday to help move one of our larger cranes back to our yard from a job in downtown Baltimore. The total weight of the crane is 1,047,640 pounds! It is broken down to 31 loads total, and it will take six days to break down and move.

There are three trucks to help with the hauling. The job is located within a trash recycling center in a very tight work area. Some days it takes all day just to get a few pieces off the crane, due to the fact that the assist crane has to be moved frequently.

During these periods, the other trucks sit in the street and wait until a piece is taken off to be loaded on them. I, on the other hand, take this as an opportunity to bail in and get dirty with the rest of the crew!

It's fascinating to see the process of taking a crane apart. There's a lot of climbing involved to get pins removed from boom sections and counterweights, as well as miles of cable to spool back onto the drums to be able to take everything apart in the first place. The crane crew sure do know their stuff!

Mackey in the Cab - July, 2023It's a great way to hang out and get to know guys on the site that are helping the crew. At the end of the day, I sure know that I've put in a full day's work!

Today, laundry, lots of it, and then rest up for next week!

Mackey:

I spent all week laying around in the truck. I don't think we really went anywhere.

John would get up in the truck and start driving. Just as I was getting into my groove, he would stop! This was starting to get irritating.

Most times he'd leave me alone for most of the day. I got to see a lot of interesting people walking by the truck, some had carts full of stuff, others were talking, but I didn't see anyone they were talking to.

Mackey in the Cab - July, 2023It was more fun when John would drive the truck inside the fence, because Leah and Brittany would always come to say "hi" and give me treats!

In fact, a lot of people site call out to me as they're walking past the truck. I never see them do that to John. And I have NEVER seen anyone give John a treat! Pretty sure they all like me better!

It's a rainy day here so I think we'll be catching up on our naps.
