Thank you for returning to B.O.N.E.S. to adopt another beagle! Although you have adopted from B.O.N.E.S. before, we still have a process we must maintain to match you with the best dog for your home.
A new application must be completed if it has been over 6 months since you last adopted or if your previous adoption counselor is not available to assist you with your new adoption. (It's a good idea to just go ahead and complete the application.) If your previous counselor is available, we will assign you to them again, as long as they have the time to give your application the proper attention it deserves. If your previous adoption counselor is no longer volunteering in adoptions, then you will be assigned to a new adoption counselor. The counselor will do a phone interview with you to make sure they get the most accurate information about your home, lifestyle, and the behavior of your current pet (if you have one). All of this information will help us match you with the right beagle.
We always require vet check for your current pets and if you owned a pet within the last two years. We often do not require another home visit, but sometimes we need to, as many of the previous home visits may be outdated or unavailable from the previous counselor.
Thank you for returning to B.O.N.E.S. for your next furry family member. We hope to keep it simple and make it as quick as we possibly can. We will try our best to find you just the perfect beagle for your home.
Please see our "frequently asked questions" below for more information.
Sincerely,
B.O.N.E.S. Adoption Team
- We just want to insure we have the most current information on file in case things have changed since you last adopted.
- We need all your updated contact information and your current veterinarian's contact information.
- Our application asks you to provide details that are useful in matching the appropriate dog to your home. For example, we need to know how long a dog is home alone, if you have other pets, and if you have a fenced yard. Why is this important? Some of our beagles cannot be left alone for extended hours, some must live with other dogs, some must be only dogs, some chase cats, and some beagles are escape artists that require securely fenced yards. (Those are just a few of the details we are looking at.)
- There already may be a waiting list for a dog that is on our website. We often have a list of approved adopters waiting for just the right beagle to show up on our website. We match dogs according to our current adopter's approval date.
- More importantly, the goal of our adoption counseling process is to match you with a dog that will be a good fit for your home, lifestyle, and your current pet's personality. Our adoption counselors are privy to details about each dog on our website that may make a dog incompatible with your home. We'd hate for you to be disappointed with the dog once you adopt it.
If your previous adoption counselor is no longer volunteering in adoptions, we will need to match you with a new adoption counselor so that they can get a sense of your lifestyle and your current pets' personalities. For example, the adoption counselor needs to understand how much you intend to exercise the dog or how your dog or dogs interact with other dogs. If you have a cat, we need to know how the cat reacts to dogs. Do you live in a location where your neighbors might complain about a vocal beagle? Then we'd need to find a quieter beagle for your home. Again, this is all so that you will be happy with the dog we place in your home.
B.O.N.E.S. is a rescue organization that often takes in animals that need rehabilitation. Therefore, we spend most of our funds received on vet bills. It is important that we know that you have provided your previous beagle with adequate veterinary care including routine exams and preventative testing, kept the dog's vaccinations up to date, and kept your dog on monthly heartworm and flea/tick prevention. We also need to know that you gave your dog good veterinary care for any other illnesses or injuries.
Often, we can waive a home visit on a previous adopter if your vet check is successful. However, if you have moved, added more pets (including your last B.O.N.E.S. beagle), had children, or have other new housemates or changes in circumstances, we may require another home visit.
Having an updated home visit does not mean that we question your ability to provide another dog with a good home. Please bear in mind that a home visit provides the adoption counselor a clearer vision of your lifestyle, your current pets' personalities, and your home and property layout to assist in our matching process. We use the feedback from the home visit volunteer to match you with the right dog for your home. Home visits for previous adopters are determined jointly by your adoption counselor and the Director of Adoptions.
