Lola

Lola Or "Agent L" or "the Lo" or "Lolabelle" or "Crazy Lo". You get the idea.

Lola is everything that McKinley is not. She is high strung, she is demanding, she is a wolf in beagle clothing. She is a royal pain in the behind. She'd like me to add that she is LOUD. The first few months of Living with Lola...were terrible. I didn't think I could handle this dog. She didn't want to snuggle, she wanted to bark. She was ALWAYS on the wrong side of the door. She pottied in the house; she was sick...Poor Ibby had emails at all hours of the night, and I was ready to tear my hair out.

And then I realized that McKinley was figuring some doggy things out - like how to get in the trash, and how to go to the door to go outside...and his tail was become less tucked under his body and actually starting to wag.

A year passed.

Even now, I sometimes still think the only thing missing from Lola is her witches hat and broom, because she can be a walking nightmare. She is the queen of crocodile tears, and of dramatics. She is the type of girl who hangs out on the wrong side of the tracks, skips curfew and talks back to her mother.

But she is the most animated, foolish, loving dog I've ever met. She gives snuggles like no ones' business. She sits in front of the mirror and chit chats with herself. She guards my shower, and adds her personal touch to any available laundry pile. Socks and undergarments are not safe from the powers of Lo. Nor is any vegetable and most fruits. Zoomie? Oh yes, a daily dose of zoomies does a heart good. So do squirrels, mice, birds, cows, and horses (anything that moves). If I sing, Lola sings. If I play cello, Lola lays down and appreciates it (McKinley runs away in abject terror). She sleeps on me. Not next to me, on me, about 90% of the time.

These two beagles love every dog they meet; and they want to meet everyone. They are opposites in almost every way possible. But they'll share the same food bowl without arguing, they'll beg in unison for treats, they play, snuggle and aroo together. Lola has taught us all so very much. Even as I'm writing this, I've got a Lola next to me, and a McKinley tossing a half-stuffed dragon into the air and catching it.

Life with beagles is good. I got more than I bargained for with these two, but I got so very much in return from them. It's humbling, exhausting, stressful, humorous and trying, being a beagle parent. I wouldn't trade it for anything.
