Cookie

Cookie I really didn't want two beagles; I was content with Bobo and the occasional foster beagle. However, foster beagle Cookie applied for—and was granted—permanent resident status here after she finished raising six chubby, not-quite-beagle puppies in my dining room. How could I turn her down, after she tried to give birth to the pups in my lap, and after she greeted me with such heart-wrenching howls when I picked her up from a stay at a kennel? She's a real sweetie and I'm delighted she has joined the family. (Cookie is on the left in the photo, Bobo on the right.)

CookieWe have had to work persistently on her behavior. While pregnant and nursing, Cookie was very aggressive with strange dogs, especially large black labs (guess what most of her pups look like!). But she gradually improved after the puppies were adopted. And in any case, she was fine with the cats and Bobo from the start and her cleverness has made teaching her 'leave it' relatively easy. I wouldn't have thought she and the cats had much of a relationship, but when she came home from her spay, feeling very poorly, one of them came over to check her out, sat down, and licked her several times on her head.

Despite her sad past, she's a happy little dog; I love the way she manages to dance, even when sitting. She greets me (and her supper) with howls of delight, and has the charming habit of carrying around a stuffed toy when she's particularly happy. So, thanks, B.O.N.E.S., for bringing Cookie into my life!
