Clara

Clara Clara was our first baby. Soon after my wife and I were married, and before human kids, she joined us as an adoption. So many things to do... life in the city, leaving her alone for hours, etc. This was all back in 2002. Then we found out we were having a human baby and moved to the country.

Clara immediately took to her new place and loved running through the woods and chasing imaginary animals in some conservation land behind our property. She had one unfortunate mishap with a neighbor's truck, and spent a couple of weeks getting rebuilt at Tufts, and then had to endure a leash.

ClaraClara was the kindest, gentlest dog I've ever encountered. When the kids were young, they could feed her and take the food back out of her mouth without incident. She would lay under their crib and bark if they woke up crying. Later on, she would lick the cat we adopted. Such a good girl.

She left us a month or so ago and I still look around for her. She could be maddening, and beagle stubborn at times, but I wouldn't trade the memories for anything. She has a grave on the back side of our property... the kids built a small stone wall and planted some wild flowers.

She'll always be our first baby.
