Mackey in the Cab Mackey came to B.O.N.E.S. from a bad situation in central Massachusetts. He was underweight and limped painfully. X-rays revealed a displaced femur fracture in his right hind leg – it was amazing that Mackey could use the leg at all. The options didn't look hopeful, but with help from the B.O.N.E.S. Medical Director, a carefully-structured exercise program, and a lot of TLC, he can now lead a normal life.

As Mackey recovered from his injuries, long-time B.O.N.E.S. adopter John was mourning the loss of his long-time beagle companion, Hudson, whose "Chronicles" were documented here for many years. John was settling into a new job with lots of driving, and Mackey loved to ride... a great match. John and Mackey will both share their viewpoints with us on this page.

Mackey in the Cab - November, 2017

Good morning from Durham, ME. It's a rainy day here. We have to be in Connecticut first thing Monday morning, so we have to leave this afternoon.

This summer I was issued a neck protector which slips on to my hard hat. This provides protection from the son for the back of my neck.

Recently, I looked at it hanging in the truck and it occurred to me that it might work as a safety vest for Mackey. I tried it on him and it fit perfectly, however it is more of a cape than a vest. It adds a lot of conversation at the job sites. Mackey has turned into a super hero with the cape.

It looks kind of silly, and it's hard for me to walk when it shifts and falls down around my feet.

Furthermore, have you ever tried to "do your business" while wearing a cape??!! I didn't think so.

One good thing about the cape is that I get more attention from it. I even had another truck driver take my picture while we were sitting in a traffic jam.

I wonder what will come next, a hard hat or a phone booth for me to run into and change?
