Mackey in the Cab Mackey came to B.O.N.E.S. from a bad situation in central Massachusetts. He was underweight and limped painfully. X-rays revealed a displaced femur fracture in his right hind leg – it was amazing that Mackey could use the leg at all. The options didn't look hopeful, but with help from the B.O.N.E.S. Medical Director, a carefully-structured exercise program, and a lot of TLC, he can now lead a normal life.

As Mackey recovered from his injuries, long-time B.O.N.E.S. adopter John was mourning the loss of his long-time beagle companion, Hudson, whose "Chronicles" were documented here for many years. John was settling into a new job with lots of driving, and Mackey loved to ride... a great match. John and Mackey will both share their viewpoints with us on this page.

Mackey in the Cab - January, 2018

Happy New Year from Baltimore, Maryland.

Mackey and I have been down here for a month helping out the Baltimore facility. It has been slow in Maine and having one truck less to worry about in Maine means a little more work for the remaining three.

I can't really complain about being down here, even though last week records were falling as fast as the temperatures, it was no comparison to what I was missing at home. I feel fortunate to have missed the extreme weather.

Mackey and I spent Christmas in Virginia with my sister and brother-in-law, One of the four children was there for a day, but the other three had other commitments, so it was a nice quiet Christmas.

We headed north for New Year's to Providence to visit with a friend up there. It was a quiet weekend, mainly due to the cold weather. We did stay up until midnight to ring in the new year. I can't remember when the last time was that I did... must be at least twenty years.

Mackey in the Cab - January, 2018It's always nice to enjoy the holidays with friends and family, but for me, it's nice to get back to the same familiar routine.

I hope everyone has a healthy, prosperous new year.

I hate this cold, powdery snow. It gets stuck in my paws and I can't walk because it's so cold. John has to pick me up and carry me, or else clean out my paws. Too cold to do much playing around outside. Pretty much "all business" when I'm out.

I got to make a new friend over Christmas, a puppy as big as a horse (to me anyway). He sure has a lot of energy, but I hold my own. He still has trouble keeping his feet under him, so I can outmaneuver him pretty easily. I even stole a treat away from him while he was distracted, and he tried get it back by giving me his sad puppy face look. Ha! I'm the master of that, so I enjoyed it while he looked on.

The next week, I got to travel to see my friend Charlie, whom I first met a few years back at the B.O.N.E.S. Beagle Bash.

Mackey in the Cab - January, 2018As we were getting caught up in the smells, Harry the bunny came hopping into the room. This is the first time meeting a rabbit, so I was pretty interested. Unlike Charlie's food, which is delicious, I had no interest in hay and lettuce.

We took some walks around the neighborhood, or hood, and the locals call it, and I can't believe how many dogs I smelled at each hydrant, pole, tree, etc. It sure was more interesting than just having Brody and Lily to smell back home.

We're back in Baltimore ready to start another week, and, early morning treats in the office!
