COOKIE

I really didn’t want two beagles; I was content with Bobo and the occasional foster beagle. However, foster beagle Cookie applied for--and was granted--permanent resident status here after she finished raising six chubby, not-quite-beagle puppies in my dining room. How could I turn her down, after she tried to give birth to the pups in my lap, and after she greeted me with such heart-wrenching howls when I picked her up from a stay at a kennel? She’s a real sweetie and I’m delighted she has joined the family. (Cookie is on the left in the photo, Bobo on the right)

We have had to work persistently on her behavior. While pregnant and nursing, Cookie was very aggressive with strange dogs, especially large black labs (guess what most of her pups look like!). But she gradually improved after the puppies were adopted. And in any case, she was fine with the cats and Bobo from the start and her cleverness has made teaching her ‘leave it’ relatively easy. I wouldn’t have thought she and the cats had much of a relationship, but when she came home from her spay, feeling very poorly, one of them came over to check her out, sat down, and licked her several times on her head.

Despite her sad past, she’s a happy little dog; I love the way she manages to dance, even when sitting. She greets me (and her supper) with howls of delight, and has the charming habit of carrying around a stuffed toy when she’s particularly happy. So, thanks, BONES, for bringing Cookie into my life!

Puppum (Trevor)

Puppum on the right

Puppum, previously Trevor, has pretty much taken over the house. He, and Daisy and Gypsy, his buddies, play constantly. Gypsy has lost over 2 pounds due to her increase in activity since Puppum's arrival. Though Puppum "bunny hops" rather than run "normally" he has no idea he has anything wrong with him! He is incredibly fast and loves to run with my other dogs and chase a ball. Puppum is 5 months now and is starting to become quite the handful, everyday I come home to find my things in the back lawn and things from the yard in the house. But he is keeping all of us on our toes and has become a important part of the family. Right now his surgery is on hold as he grows a little, he has had no change in his abilities since he came so hopefully he will avoid surgery altogether.

Buddy

Well it has been one year today since we adopted our sweet
Buddy. So I thought it important for me to let you and everyone else at BONES know how much having Buddy has meant to us. He is and always will be a part of our family. He is a very funny dog, but smart- very smart. He picked up the rhythm of our household in a matter of days. He knows
Monday morning and doesn't like it. (We leave him) He knows Friday when I have the day off and he gets to hop on the bed and rest his head on my leg. When he gets upset he goes to his basket of toys picks out something and keeps squeaking it until he feels better. My husband will say "give me five!" and Buddy slaps his paw on my husbands hand. He
knows that on Sunday when I go to the closet to get his special water bottle.......he is going for a ride. He has toys, a blanket, pillow, water bottle, two dog beds. But that isn't what makes him happy. Being part of our family is what makes Buddy happy. And having this sweet dog has brought us such joy.

So Warren and I would like to make a donation to Bones every year on the anniversary of his adoption.

Gratefully,

Foster, now Frasier

This is Foster, now named Frasier, enjoying his new home. He has learned the basic commands of sit, stay and come and is working very hard at mastering the skills of being house trained. Frasier enjoys playing with his younger beagle brother Jack and snuggling with either of his new owners for an afternoon nap. He is a very smart and sweet little guy and is referred to by his vet as being a very good looking beagle. We are so blessed and happy that he was able to join our family.

Piper (formerly Britta)

Hi Bones!

I just wanted to thank you so, for finding my forever mommy and daddy! I have been with them almost a month now, and I am starting feel at home. I was a little shy at first, but that is a thing of the past! Now all I want to do is cuddle...and chase all the deer in NJ...they are big, but I am sure I can get one. We have a very big yard and I can smell them everywhere...lots of bunnies too, oh this place is great! I also have a new name, which I often come too, when I have the time!

I would have sent along a picture of mommy and daddy and me happy, but they say I am soooo pretty and sooo cute, that I make everyone else in the picture look no so good :). Hope you all like this one of me, it is a favorite!

Well, I guess that is all I have to say, except that I am VERY happy, and VERY loved...what more could a beautiful lemon girl want.

Thank you Pete and Judy for taking such good foster care of me until I found I my new home, and thank you all of BONES, you are the best.

Wags and Kisses (I do them all now, any chance I get!) -Piper(I was once called Britta) 11/04

Sydney

Sidney joined our family on Father’s Day weekend, not exactly the gift my husband had in mind, but she instantly charmed him. On Saturday night we all knew that Sid was here to stay, after spending several hours sleeping on a dog bed in the bedroom, she leapt up on the bed and joined us for the rest of the night. Since then she has gradually taken over other comfortable sleeping spots, her favorite being the wing chair in the bedroom, but she always returns to sleep with us early in the morning. She and Barney, our senior Brew Beagle, started out a bit rocky, many vocal exchanges, but Sid soon realized that Barney is the Alpha Dog of the house and has become much more respectful of him. She loves to go for walks in the park, looking for chipmunks and squirrels, but luckily she is learning not to chase them anymore, for which I am thrilled. She also is an avid “Arm Chair Hunter” spending hours either on a bed looking out the window or on the deck watching for rabbits, chipmunks or squirrels. When she spots something she “sings” with excitement. She has the most endearing way of begging; she sits next to you and just touches your leg gently with her nose and looks up at you with her soulful brown eyes. She really has the best qualities of her Beagle/Springer Spaniel heritage.

A Special Thanks to Leanne for bringing Sidney into the BONES program and into our lives, she really is a very special little gal and greatly loved by all of us

Thelma

Before
After

Just a note about Thelma from circa Aug-2003.

Well Its been almost 14 months since you referred us to Thelma. The photo on the left is the before picture that you provided at the time of her adoption. On the right is her photo
taken last Sun morning on her walk. What a difference!

Thelma has a new pink collar. She loves her walks with Bailey ( our 50 lb Harrier beagle) of 1 - 2 miles. She has been so dedicated to her WW program and is now a mere 50% of her old self. Five more pounds to goal!

Thelma is such a dear heart. She is playful, as she should be. It is gratifying to see her run as she will impulsively break into an eager sprint. She cries with joy when either of us come home and gets along very well with Bailey. Bailey loves her and will clean her ears and eyes. She on the other hand remains a bit aloof.

Thank you for finding Thelma. She continues to be a perfect match for us. It's obvious that all she wanted was to be somebody's good dog. She is a treasure.

Best Regards

Bagel

I've been living in my new home for almost a week and I love it!!! My new people give me lots of affection and love, but it makes me really sad when they go away. Hopefully, I will understand soon that they always come back for me. In the evening, after my supper, I lay in my bed and snooze by the fireplace, and when mom and dad are ready for nite-nite, I get to go sleep in the big people bed and that's my favorite place to be!!!

I just wanted to send a sloppy kiss to my foster mom Donna...and a big howl for Susan...Thanks, I wouldn't be here without you guys!

Love Bagel (10/04)

P.S. Thanks for the lift Martha and all the drivers that helped to bring me home to Vermont!

Baron

When John and I decided to get a dog we both knew it had to be a beagle. What we got was a wonderful bagel that is all hound dog!! Baron loves our three cats but has a particular attachment to Harley as you can see from the picture. They often nuzzle each other and like to take naps together from time to time. But occasionally a game of chase the cat is in order. Baron loves his biscuits as all true hounds do. He is so easy going and loves to lay on the bed at night to watch a little TV before he retires to his own bed in the corner of the room. He also loves his walks at the local state park where his howl can be heard for miles when he picks up a scent! Thanks to BONES for helping Baron so we can have the privilege of taking care of him.
